What are estimated and actual meter readings?

Last Updated -

  • An estimated reading is when an electricity meter is not physically read, but the billed amount is generated based upon your past electricity usage with some variation for the seasons. Mojo receives estimates of the customer' past electricity usage from your distributor, which we use to bill between your meter reads.
  • An actual reading is when an electricity meter is physically read and you are billed based upon this reading. If you are a smart meter customer, your bill will wholly be based on an actual meter read. If you are not a smart meter customer, your bill following a meter read may be based on an actual meter read or partially on an actual read and partially on estimated reads. This depends on when your meter is read in relation to your billing date.

Unlike most other energy retailers, Mojo bills customers monthly. This allows for greater control of finances, as there is no large bill every 3 months. It also puts a customer's electricity bill in-line with other outgoings, including bills such as mortgage / rent, phone, insurance and various types of subscriptions.

Non smart electricity meters are not read more than once every 3 months. This generally means that you will receive 2-3 estimated bills before your meter is read. Once we receive your meter read any discrepancies from the first 2-3 months of billing on estimates will be adjusted. Please note, this only applies to Mojo customers who don’t have a smart meter installed.

Estimated vs actual reading examples

Mojo Customer A

Full quarter estimated and actual usage Month 1 Month 2 Month 3
Estimated Reading $1200 $400 $400 Customer pays $625 to settle the quarterly electricity usage
Actual Reading $1425 $475 $475

Mojo Customer B

Full quarter estimated and actual usage Month 1 Month 2 Month 3
Estimated Reading $1200 $400 $400 Customer pays $175 to settle the quarterly electricity usage
Actual Reading $975 $325 $325

In the examples above, the two Mojo customers have been billed in months 1 and 2 based upon the estimated reading. This estimate is usually based on the usage at your property during the same period in the previous year. Whilst the estimated reading is close to the actual usage, it can never be exact - so when the meter is read in month 3 any discrepancy is settled.

Over the quarter customer A used more energy than in the previous 3 months, so their estimated reading was lower than the actual energy usage, meaning that the 3rd month bill was higher. Customer B used less energy than the estimate, which resulted in the 3rd month bill being lower.

If you have a Plus+ EnergyPass® you will receive a smart meter that is read remotely on a daily basis and not be subject to the issues related to estimated reads.
